How Aer Lingus got its name

aer lingusSomeone told me before that Aer Lingus comes from aer and ling (jump), because of how the plane jumps into the sky.

Naturally I have shared the little factoid at any relevant chance.

However today I discovered that it is not correct!

Aer Lingus is the English spelling of Aerloingeas, that comes from aer and loingeas (fleet). The word loingeas comes from long (boat).
