Dán ar BBC Uladh

Aréir ar BBC Uladh cuireadh tús leis an sraith nua ‘Seo An Saol’ le Treasa Bhreathnach & Proinsias Ó Coinn.

bbc gaeilge

‘Tuismitheoirí agus teaghlaigh’ an téarma a bhí ag an gcéad chlár.

Bhí píosa nuascríofa agam darb ainm ‘Máthair agus Iníon’ mar chuid den chlár.

Agus i mo theannta ar an gclár tá an fear grinn Ger Staunton, agus Méabh Nic Alastair ag caint faoin a bheith ag súil le leanbh nua.

Is féidir éisteacht leis anseo – tá mo dhán fhéin ag tús an chláir.

(Ní féidir liomsa ach na botúin fhoghraíochta a rinne mé a chloisteáil ach sure sin an saol! Ná tóg orm é!)

Beidh mé ag súil leis an gclár an tseachtain seo chugainn!

Podchraoladh nua le RRR

Ghlac mé páirt sa tsraith nua phodchraoltaí seo – ‘Céard a cheapann tú?’ de chuid Raidió Rí Rá.

San chéad eagrán, pléitear ‘Food Porn’.

An gceannaímid bia áirithe toisc go bhfuil sé faiseanta? An gcaithimid an iomarca ama ag cur grianghraf dár mbéilte ar Instagram? An cóir dúinn bheith gafa le Starbucks agus le tósta abhacáid?

Eiseofar eagrán amháin gach Luan!

WTF!?How are fadas pronounced?

Here’s my rough guide to the pronunciation of fadas:

I made sure to put a **DISCLAIMER** in the description!

This video is a rough guide to pronouncing fadas and illustrates only one way to pronounce each vowel. It’s important to note that many other pronunciations are correct and these vary depending on speaker, accent, and dialect. The sounds of the Ulster dialect in particular are not represented in this video. If you wish to consistently emulate the sound of a particular dialect, I recommend using the recordings found on www.teanglann.ie

Alt faoin ‘dá chineál Gaeilge’

an t-alt seo a scríobh Brian Ó Broin dochreidte spéisiúil.

Is teangeolaí é Ó Broin agus déanann sé an-jab ag déanamh cur síos ar an scoilt idir an dá chineál Gaeilge – Gaeilge na nGaeltachtaí agus Gaeilge na gCathracha.

I decided to do a comparative analysis of the two types of Irish (Gaeltacht and non-Gaeltacht) using the most common of these criteria: pronunciation, word-order, word-formation, and vocabulary. To do this, I transcribed recordings of news reports compiled and read by Gaeltacht speakers on Raidió na Gaeltachta, and then by urban speakers on the two urban Irish-language stations, Raidió Fáilte in Belfast and Raidió na Life in Dublin.

Bheadh tuairimí againn uilig faoin ábhar seo dar ndóigh, ach tá sé iontach firicí a bhfuil bunús eolaíochta leo a léamh!

Tá roinnt firicí an-spéisiúil faoi úsáid na teanga aige:

In terms of expected pronunciation, the relaxed urban speakers missed almost every opportunity to lenite or eclipse.

… the sentences of urban speakers are notably less sophisticated [use less subclauses] than those of their Gaeltacht counterparts.

… one might expect a lexical analysis of the texts to show that urban speakers have smaller vocabularies, but they actually seem to have much the same vocabulary as their Gaeltacht counterparts.

WTF!? Is Gaeilgeoir an insult?

WHAT THE ACTUAL FOCAL!?

We all know what the term ‘Gaeilgeoir’ means… or what it’s supposed to mean. But also, depending on who you are talking to, it takes on different meanings.

I had a lot to say about the term ‘Gaeilgeoir’ – as I am sure many of you do too! This video was originally 15 minutes long (!!!) but in the surviving 4 minutes I unpack the term as much as I can.

Let me know what you think and if there’s anything I left out!

WTF!? Politics

I’m always interested in the Irish words used everyday in Ireland. Are they pronounced correctly? Understood properly?

Not a day goes by that there isn’t a news report from the Dáil, often relating to the three biggest parties in Ireland, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Sinn Féin.

On radio and TV though,  there are some, eh, unusual interpretations of these words to be heard.

Now, I’m no expert on politics BUT I can pronounce the names of these parties, and explain what they mean.

So here’s the is the second video in the What the Focal!? series.

Feel free to share as a gentle hint to those who have been misguided!

REIC on RTÉ

rtelolo

I mentioned that RTÉ were recording at REIC at the start of the month.

They released a 3 minute clip up on the player today – here. Gaeilge with English subtitles.

Also, REIC will be part of the Random Acts as Gaeilge programme on RTÉ on March 16th, which will also feature Na Gaeil Óga, the Pop-up Gaeltacht, Óga Yóga, and many others.

Looking forward to seeing the program in it’s entirety!

Meon na mBan – Moany women

Alt anseo san Irish Times faoi Meon na mBan – clár nua raidió a thosaigh mé le Raidió na Life.

timesciara

Taitníonn an t-ainm ‘Meon na mBan’ liom… macalla de na focail Bhéarla ‘moan’ agus ‘man’… nó b’fhéidir go bhfuil mo ghrá d’fhocail ag dul thar fóir ansin!

Ar aon nós, ní ag tabhairt amach faoi fhir a bheimid in aon chor!

Beidh plé ar an gclár seo oscailte de gach ábhar faoin spéir, leis an mbéim ar dhearcadh na mban, dearcadh a bhíonn in easnamh go ró-mhinic.

Mná – 50% den daonra, ach ní cheapfá sin ag breathnú ar fhorlámhas na bhfear sna meáin!

Mise a bheidh mar phríomhláithreoir, agus gach seachtain beidh meitheal iontach ag cabhrú liom – idir thuairisceoirí RnaL, thuairisceoirí seachtracha, agus aíonna speisialta.

Craolfar an clár beo gach Céadaoin idir 18:00 – 18.30. Bí linn!

Podchraoltaí anseo dála an scéil!

Lá Idirnáisiúnta na mBan 2017

Mar is iondúil, tá roinnt imeachtaí Gaelacha roghnaithe agus fógartha ag banríon na siamsaíochta Sinéad Ní Uallacháin in NÓS anseo.

Ina measc tá Lá Idirnáisiúnta na mBan i dTeach an Ardmhéara. Scríobh mé faoi cheana anseo.

Táim ag súil go mór mór leis!

Beidh mé ag rith ann caoldíreach ó Raidió na Life, mar go bhfuil mé tar éis clár nua a thosnú gach Céadaoin 18:00-18:30 darb ainm Meon na mBan.
